BRANDS & THE CITY

In itself, the show represented so much hope, unity and girl power. A group of imperfect women who were navigating life, brought together by their circumstances, love for New York City, cosmopolitan cocktails, fashion and men. This month marks the 20th Anniversary of one of my favourite shows, ‘Sex & The City’. I found myself a tad emotional when I thought back to the naïve girl who grew up watching the series on SABC 3. During last year’s festive break, my sister and I decided to re-watch the series, from the pilot, which first hit the US airwaves on June 6th 1998. Of course, watching the series as an informed adult was a damning experience. Aside from its lack of diversity and inclusivity, I was also woken up to the idea that Mr Big was never the “prince charming” I had imagined him to be.

For some reason, growing up I found the show relatable, despite its glossy, overt, elitist, fast-paced backdrop. The women were super stylish, career-driven, imperfect, liberated, and rooted in their love and support for one another. The producers could have tried harder to make the show a lot less problematic, but for the most part, they got women right. They managed to get many women hooked on the show and continue to have some of us hooked to this day. As a pop culture fan, I’ve always viewed the show as one of the biggest influences of my taste. The production was more than a pop culture phenomenon, it also acted as an advertising medium with a very solid target, which is always a plus for advertisers. Whether its my favourite cocktail, magazine, footwear and my love for New York, a lot of what I love today was influenced by Carrie and her girls. Below is a list of brands that I love today, as influenced by Sex & The City.

NEW YORK

You can’t think of Sex & the City without New York coming to mind. The producers did an amazing job depicting the city through the girls’ eyes. Carrie in particular adored the city and through her, we were also drawn to love is just as much. New York has often been referred to as the fifth character in the series.

MACBOOK

Carrie’s Apple MacBook was as much a fixture as her much loved Manolo Blahniks and featured prominently in almost every episode of the series. Her Mac was shown at the beginning and end of many episodes, and even had its own subplot in the episode, “My Motherboard, My Self.” Shockingly, in the first Sex & The City movie, Carrie made a switch to an Windows laptop, thanks to a product placement deal between the producers and HP.

MANOLO BLAHNIK

Carrie’s obsession with Manolo Blahnik’s shoes has been widely credited for making the shoe designer a household name.The luxury satin shoes became synonymous with the ultra stylish New York writer throughout the series’ lifespan and its subsequent films.

THE COSMO

The Cosmo was Carrie Bradshaw’s drink of choice throughout much of Sex and the City. To be honest, I’m not big on cocktails, but if I must have one, it has to be a cosmo. Influenced.

VOGUE

Who remembers Carrie freelancing at Vogue and her unforggetable wedding spread for the magazine in the movie? As much as Carrie saw herself more as an Allure girl, she was pretty much the quintessential Vogue girl in my eyes.
