I’ve always described the GTC – Rising Star as someone who has recently blossomed in their chosen field, one who is starting to attract attention from brands. Since the platform’s inception, we have listed now-A-Listers such as Ayanda Thabethe, Duckie Thot, Paris Jackson, Jaden Smith, Siya Beyile, Olivia Culpo, Lulama Wolf, Jasmine Sanders, Justine Skye and Yara Shahidi as the GTC – Rising Stars. These personalities have since blossomed in the truest sense of the word, collaborating with esteemed brands such as Calvin Klein, MAC, Reebok, Mizani, Bulgari and Louis Vuitton to mention but a few. I’m proud to present the first ever #GTCAward for ‘Rising Star of the Year’ to someone who embodies the qualities of a rising star.
AND THE WINNER IS:
Sho Madjozi! The poet-turned actress and rapper, is one personality I predict to blow up from a brand collaboration perspective. The 25-year old has had many of us in fascination with her authentic sound and adoration for her culture. In such a short period of time, the energetic rapper born ‘Maya Wegerif’ has managed to carve out her own niche within the SA music scene. I appreciate that her infectious persona permeates through her music, image and overall style.
The Dumi Hi Phone singer is widely celebrated for remaining true to her Tsonga culture, and is determined to continue shining the light on issues surrounding African culture. “On a global scale, all African cultures have really been overlooked. At best, we’ve just been simply mimicked and copied. Our stories are then taken for other people to make money and make a living from that. Then the African artist gets erased from the story. We are tired of that. We need to be central to stories that are about us,” she told TimesLive.
Her views on African artistry have landed her a spot on Absolut Vodka’s mega campaign, One Source Live, alongside creatives such as Khuli Chana, Trevor Stuurman, Fabrice Monteir and Osborne Macharia. “On top of performing on the main stage, I will be curating one of the other stages. I want people to witness live creativity. So not only will my stage have super crazy performances, the artists on my stage will collaborate to record 3 tracks, right on stage in front of the audience! After that, you can say you were there when the Absolut One Source Live album was recorded. How cool is that?” she recently opened up to Channel24 about the exciting campaign which culminates this March.
Sho Madjozi’s rap skills along her authentic aesthetic will not only see her star rise within the music scene, but in the fashion and brand collab landscape as well. The hitmaker has recently released a limited edition of her colourful style T-Shirt. Labelled the ‘Hair Salon’ T-shirt, the design reflects her colourful personality through a front print in the form of a grid with her photos showcasing her signature hairstyle.
