Last year marked the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death and I couldn’t resist following all the tribute specials that came with the sad event. What I found fascinating was the fact that the tributes revealed how little I knew about the beloved Princess and all time fashion Icon. It hit me that, along with her legion of fans, I had fallen in love with her because of her style, her poise and overall philanthropic nature. Eleri Lynn, curator of ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’ explained it best, “What really set Diana apart was her ability to communicate with her clothing. We all have a sense of what we think she was like, and yet so much of it comes from still photographs, and a large part of that [idea] is communicated through the different clothes that she wore.”
Off-White’s creative director, Virgil Abloh, recently launched his shoe collection in collaboration with luxury British footwear brand Jimmy Choo. The capsule collection is influenced by Diana’s avant-garde style and comprises of Cinderella-inspired shoes, including knee-high stiletto boots wrapped in black tulle and pointed-toe pumps encased in plastic to look like glass. Off-White’s Spring 2018 Princess Diana-themed runway presentation, titled “Natural Woman,” was showcased during Paris Fashion Week 2017, along with the collection’s footwear made in collaboration with Jimmy Choo.
BELOW WE LIST SOME KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COLLABORATION:
“I always had this idea within my collection to sort of get more specific and storytell,” stated Virgil. “I was working on this collection that was a tribute to Princess Diana and [Jimmy Choo] were a shoemaker that were making shoes for her. And I thought it could have been a cool way to relate the product and the narrative of Princess Diana to a younger audience.” I loved Princess Diana and everything her legacy represented growing up. This collection is a befitting and most beautiful nod to her timeless style.
This unlikely match-up sees the two brands mash up the streetwise aesthetic that is associated with Abloh’s Off-White brand and Choo’s luxury DNA. This marks the first time that the high-end iconic label has collaborated on a commercial shoe collection with a ready-to-wear house. “To collaborate with a brand like Off-White allows Jimmy Choo to explore a new avenue and take part in a different conversation,” Sandra Choi, Jimmy Choo’s creative director, said in a press release announcing the collaboration.
The modern-day Cinderella shoe is born
Ahead of the collaboration announcement, the creative director and long-time creative collaborator of Kanye West shared a screenshot on his Instagram of the magical moment in Disney’s Cinderella when Prince Charming puts the glass slipper on her foot, alongside the caption “glass slippers.” Instead of having his designs sculpted in glass, Abloh uses Choo’s iconic Lance shoe as the reference before getting reworked into a new style and wrapped up in softly ruched PVC. “The point to this collection was to tell a story that an impactful figure like [Princess Diana] is our living version of Cinderella. The goal was to “make a shoe that gives that Princess feeling. ‘The New Glass Slipper,’” he said in a press statement.
I think I may be ready for my princess moment.
