It’s Nyadak ‘Duckie’ Thot season and I’m all the way here for it! The South Sudanese – Australian model has been having an amazing 12 months since her big-break last year July when she walked her first runway show at Yeezy Season 4. The Australia’s Next Top Model alum who rose to fame on the show has been hard at work and successfully climbing her way up the high-fashion ladder.
The 21-year old ethereal beauty with her sun-kissed complexion and statue-sque frame has already secured work with big name clients and pranced on numerous high-fashion runways including Naeem Khan, Fenty x Puma, DSquared and Ulyana Sergeenko. She has also graced over plenty high-fashion magazine editorials and lookbooks, including appearing alongside Rihanna for Paper Magazine. She recently got herself her first Vogue Australia editorial which spells more success for the stunning beauty in the near future.
After a successful stint on the ANTM show, she took a brave step and moved to New York in 2016, with only $400 to her name. In her own words, she’s has always loved flicking through magazines, looking through the photos and knowing that there is a story behind them and she is now living her fashion dream. “As a girl I’d look and say, ‘wow that girl looks so amazing’, so doing it now is a dream come true.”
She became an internet sensation last month, when she was attending a BET Awards in Los Angeles alongside her famous beauty Youtuber sister Nikki Perkins. She posted an image of her flawless self that instantly caught people’s attention, with many giving her the moniker “Black Barbie” due to her real-life doll-esque looks. Since then, Duckie has gained even more attention on social media, which is very beneficial for her brand because as we know – the modelling industry needs more than just good looks these days to attract big contracts, the more social media audience one has – the bigger the contracts. As unsavoury and problematic the fetishization of her dark skin complexion is to many like myself, Duckie is a very pretty girl with a bomb personality who deserves her place and success in the industry that often shuts its doors in the face of black models.
When Duckie was not being a topic of conversation on the internet, she was being transformed into the iconic character of ‘Alice’ by the amazing photographer Tim Walker and new Vogue British editor Edward Enninful. She expressed her joy to Vogue about her role on the project and how special it was to her. “It will probably be one of the best and biggest jobs that I ever have the opportunity to do. Working with Edward Enninful, Tim Walker, and Malcolm Edwards was a complete honor. It was super cool to share our own take on the classic” she said. She was introduced as the first protagonist of 2018 for the exclusive Pirelli “Alice in Wonderland” themed calendar, which features an all-black ensemble cast with notable names like Naomi Campbell, Sean Diddy Combs, Lupita Nyong’o and our very own Thando Hopa.
