Plenty things can be attributed to the ascendancy of my favourite family in pop culture, the Kardashian/Jenners. But in my opinion, it is their aspirational family ethos that has catapulted the prominent family into enormous success under the management of the matriarch Kris Jenner. The clan collectively earned a staggering $122.5 million in 2016, dominating and filling six of seven spots on the first ever Top-Earning Reality Stars list in Forbes. As part of their astute business acumen, the family is known for making phenomenal business ventures and collaborations that benefit almost everyone in the Kardashian ménage. With a combined social media following of more than 500million they have skillfully mastered the art of leveraging their personal brands whilst simultaneously blending together with their family’s brand. Be it TV shows, clothing businesses, brand endorsements, mobile games and even make-up lines, the family always rolls as a tight pack.
Let’s check out notable projects where Kardashians/Jenners taught us lessons in the art of keeping the kash in the family.
- Taking over Reality TV
The first and prime example is their family show Keeping Up with The Kardashians (KUWTK) which has been airing on E! channel for a decade, 13 seasons and with the 14th season currently being filmed. The show’s success ultimately gave birth to several spin-offs including Kourtney and Kim Take Miami, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, Khloe and Lamar, Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons, Dash Dolls, Rob and Chyna and soon, Life of Kylie. The shows are the least revenue generators for the clan, albeit they serve a significant purpose as an advertising platform for all of their other projects. Most of the family members have appeared on each of the spin-offs and several television specials about exclusive family events. The quadrumvirate of the family – Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian West, Kourtney Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian have been involved as Executive Producers for almost each of the shows listed above.
- The Ultimate K-Trio
For quite some time between 2008 to 2012 Kim, Kourtney and Khloe were the ultimate business trio in the family. Although Kim had the most gigs of her own outside the family, I remember how often the sisters would collaborate in many business deals. From brand endorsements, their book titled: “Kardashian Konfidential” to Kardashian Klothing line and numerous magazine covers together. The trio also ran their popular boutique DASH in Calabasas and saw over the expansion of the business to two other stores in New York and Miami, although the Miami store has since been sold to a big department store. The girls held their own and helped their mother Kris run her own boutique Smooch in Calabasas as well. I mean, the three even won Teen’s Choice Award in 2012 for Choice TV Reality/Variety Star: Female category – can you say sisterhood goals?!
- Kim Kardashian Mobile Game
Mrs. West undoubtedly pioneered the celebrity mobile game industry and the tech-entrepreneur has a whole Forbes cover to show for it. When her record-smashing reality video game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood mobile game hit the scene in 2014 it instantly became a massive hit with people of all ages and raked in more than $74 million in its first year. In true Kardashian style, Kimberly gradually added most of her family members into the money minting mobile game. The younger sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner shortly followed in their big sister’s mobile endeavours by launching their own game
“We made a million in a minute” rapper Kanye West bragged on his song ‘Facts’. Yup, when his wife Kim Kardashian dropped her own line of emojis in 2015 called #Kimojis, the app generated exactly $1 million a minute and topped the Apple’s app chart. During her hiatus last year, the digital/social media queen applied the family values again when she released another batch of Kimojis titled “Family Pack” featuring several members of her family. The family went all out in support and gushed on their respective websites over the release. Suddenly the “We” in Kanye’s lyric made perfect sense!
- Kylie Cosmetics
Since the launch of her multimillion-dollar empire Kylie Cosmetics, Kylie Jenner has made collaborative ranges with two of her big sisters Khloe Kardashian and Kim Kardashian West – The Koko Collection + Palette and KKW by Kylie Cosmetics. She also teased a possible collaboration with Kourtney Kardashian. Bringing in both of her sisters’ enormous following, the $29 lip-kit + face palette collections became instant favourites with her loyal customer base and sold out in minutes. To top it all off, when big sis Kim Kardashian launched her own make-up line KKW Beauty last month, the in-demand KKW lip-kit collection was also sold on her kkwbeauty.com website. So instead of Kylie restocking the collab on her website, the customers and traffic was redirected to the KKW Beauty website – super smart collaborative strategy if you ask me!
- The Duo: Kendall + Kylie
The youngest siblings of the kinfolk are also holding their part of the family tradition with their magnificent work ethic. The two have made serious bank together with a plethora of successful collaborations with top fashion brands including Topshop, Pacsun, Madden Girl. The duo put their sartorial savvy to their impressive high-end eponymous contemporary line which launched last year and immediately attracted significant luxury retailers like Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. As if that wasn’t enough, in February this year the budding fashion creative directors unveiled a limited dreamy glaimleisure clothing line titled DropOne, the follow up offering – DropTwo was dropped in May, both lines were sold exclusively at kendall-kylie.com. Bags, shoes, jewellery, sunglasses, you name it – the Jenner girls are seriously doing it all and killing it!.
