NOMZAMO’S SURPRISING RISE TO THE TOP OF THE BRAND LADDER

Her enchanting beauty, her incredible body and captivating laugh are enough to bring any room to a complete stand still when she makes an entrance. I love that with all these qualities, there is still something quite authentic about Nomzamo Mbatha’s aura. Most people look at Nomzamo’s achievements and perhaps consider her to be one of those lucky few that probably get everything they pray for. For me she represents the notion that not every door you knock on is meant to open for you. Nomzamo first burst onto the scene as one of the ‘MTVBase VJ Search’ hopefuls, which was later won by VEntertainment’s Nomuzi Mabena. Since then, Nomzamo has been pursuing her true passion, acting, and has since appeared on Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya, etv’s Umlilo, to starring in Akin Omotoso’s ‘Tell Me Sweet Something’. This month, alongside YFM’s Dj Sabby, she took over Rotterdam to host the red carpet for the MTV Europe Music Awards, four years after losing out on her MTV Base VJ dream.nomzamo1

She currently occupies the Ambassador role for some of the most prestigious brands, more lucrative than most local stars hold. I find it extremely impressive that she has managed to become a brand magnet in her own right; in the few years she has been in the entertainment industry. Following a few cryptic tweets, Nomzamo surprised us all when she announced that she was the first Brand Ambassador for international skincare brand, Neutrogena. “Neutrogena started as a dream, and through scientific discovery, creative thinking and the resilience to defy expectations without any compromises, a brand was born. We support women around the world and are proud to help them put their best face forward as they pursue their own dreams – big or small,” said Alicia Sontag, President, Beauty Care, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc in a press statement. As a Neutrogena Brand Ambassador, Mbatha who joined the likes of Kerry Washington, Gabrielle Union and Jennifer Garner told Sowetan at the time of the announcement, “I’m very elated. I never thought in a million years that it could ever happen to me, to be able to collaborate with such a global brand that is trusted internationally. For me, it’s just amazing and I’ve always loved it, it’s been on my vision board, it’s just an incredible journey”.

If you thought she was done, then just like me, you were wrong. Earlier this year Nomzamo jetted off to New York City to attend our favourite Bad Gal’s FENTY x PUMA collection exclusive showcase, walking down the red carpet alongside stars such as Vogue’s Anna Wintour, Supermodel Naomi Campbell, Chris Rock and Designer Jeremy Scott, to name a few. This year, PUMA launched their “Do You” global campaign, directed by campaign inspiration and creative director, Rihanna, headlined by model Cara Delevingne. The campaign, which “aims to inspire confidence in women everywhere,” also unveiled Mbatha as its local face. “I think we are definitely living in a time where women are taking back their identity, we’re taking back the narrative of feminism and we’re saying, I’m going to do me,” said the PUMA SA Ambassador.

Nomzamo is also rolling around the Jozi streets in a beastly Aidi R8, following the brand’s announcement of its new Brand Ambassadors. The self-proclaimed Nubian Princess joins Touch Central’s Tbo Touch and Olympic Gold Medalist, Wayde Van Niekerk in her new role. From her recent magazine covers, to hosting jobs, it’s clear that brands are embracing her star. All we can do is sit back and expect even bigger things from Nomzamo’s brand.
