She is featured in this month’s Vogue Brasil, focusing on her journey transitioning from Reality TV starlet into fashion mogul. Draya has managed to rebrand herself from the confrontational “basketball wife” to a grounded business woman and mother. I’ve never really understood Draya’s role in the reality TV series, considering that she was not a wife, nor was she dating anyone in the league at the time. “Starting a swimsuit company is something that I’ve always wanted to do. I was blocked off from creativity and resources because I was in Pennsylvania, so when I got the call that I was able to do Basketball Wives and move to California, I said oh I have to do this because this is going to be my chance to get my swimsuit company going”, she told xoNecole. This made me understand why she would grab the opportunity to do Basketball Wives LA with both hands.
Draya, with the support of her mom raised her first born child, Kniko, after his father was incarcerated for 10 years while she was 7 months pregnant. In her efforts of supporting her son and family, Draya spent 7 years “working in clubs”, before getting her big break on VH1’s Basketball Wives, after gaining notoriety from dating a “few NBA players”. In her quest to becoming a bold and feisty empowered business woman, Draya decided to abandon her “wifely” duties, to solely focus on building her fashion empire, through her “Fine Ass Girls” and “Mint Swim” brands. “Once my swimsuit company began to grow and develop and it became the number one income source for me, I saw how much money I was making from swimsuits than reality TV, I decided that I’m done arguing for four months out of the year. I just didn’t want to do it anymore”, she explained.
In addition to building a fashion empire, Draya is also striving to become a movie star. Following her Reality TV exit, she enrolled for acting class and adopted the Hollywood lifestyle of going to auditions tirelessly. She has since appeared in films such as True To The Game and Perfect Match, alongside Cassie and my husband Terrence J. Draya’s turnaround strategy is really impressive, not only is she gracing Vogue pages, she is also growing her fashion empire, while making a name for herself in Hollywood. I can’t wait to see her continued growth in the industry and I’m certainly looking forward to her new fashion brand, Beige & Coco, which she is currently developing.
